Nueva Andalucia was first conceived by Jose Banus, who bought the land in 1962, the commencement of construction began not long after the inauguration of Puerto Banus in 1968. According to the 2011 census, there is 135,124 inhabitants in the Marbella area, 15,000 of which are based in Nueva Andalucia. In the summer months this number grows considerably.
Close to Puerto Banus (4km/6 minutes) Nueva Andalucia is an extensive and striking residential area on the Costa del Sol. Set on a lovely stretch of land, that is inland from Banus, with the magisterial La Concha mountain watching over the suburb, it has two delightful lakes, and excellent golf courses. It attracts wealthy and famous people, who want to get away from the Banus spotlight, and live in the tranquillity of a very attractive and exclusive gated communities. There are some extremely large villas, as well as some slightly more modest properties and a host of luxury apartment complexes to choose from. It has an air of Beverly Hills, which maybe as a result of the architect Noldi Schreck, who was one of the two architects who created Puerto Banus, and who helped to design Beverly Hills.
Nueva Andalucia has a number of small commercial centres and restaurants, and as a result of its location, is a short distance from Puerto Banus nightlife. Due to its, sometimes confusing labyrinth of tree lined roads, and strange house numbering, it provides anonymity, which many residents value. It is extremely pretty and provides a life style, that many people dream off.
Nueva Andalucia Amenities
There are three main entrances and three back entrances to Nueva Andalucia. The main entrance is via Avenida Pilar Calvo, with the Bullring and La Sala acting as landmarks to the entrance. The other two entrances are, from the A7/N340 and onto Avenida de los Giroles, and the third entrance opposite the eastern boulevard of Puerto Banus. The three back entrances, worth knowing about during peak traffic are one from San Pedro, crossing Rio Guadaliza into La Campana; another route from La Quinta Golf to the roundabout at Los Naranjos; and another from the east by Aloha School, passing over Rio Verde to the coastal highway west-bound carriageway.
An hour from Malaga airport, with a distance of 64.6km, it is just 4km to Puerto Banus, and 12.2km to Marbella. For shopping in Nueva Andalucia, there is the Centro Plaza with a range of shops, supermarket, bars and restaurants, as well as a gym.
There are a number of private hospitals in Puerto Banus and Marbella, close to Nueva Andalucia, most notable Helicopter Hospital Health (6mins/3.4km), Marbella International Hospital (8mins/3.1km) and Hospital Quiron Salud (18mins/10.7km). There are numerous clinics that offer a wide number of services. There is also the Hospital Costa del Sol (17mins/17.5km), which is a state run hospital.
There are numerous schools in the area, starting with Nursery and going up to 18 years of age. There is the Aloha College, a renowned international school for children aged from 3 to 18 (9mins/3.9km), Entoga the International Infant School (4mins/1.9km), The British International School of Marbella (13mins/8.4km) Marbella Montessori School (11mins/5.3km), Colegio Saint George’s School (8mins/3.7km), and the German School in Elviria (27mins/27.7km) to name but a few.

Nueva Andalucia Activities
The nearest beach to Nueva Andalucia is Playa de Nueva Andalucia, which is made up of a number of small coves, the main beach area , and most popular, is Los Espigones. The beach is a good place to do some celebrity spotting in the summer, and there is La Sala Beach Club and Blue Ray Beach Club close by. There is a large selection of water activities available, water skiing, jet skiing, fly boarding, wake boarding, scuba diving, para-sailing, and big game fishing. You can also arrange yacht trips, and boat charter. Parking can be very difficult during the summer months.
Other beaches in the area are: Playa de la Fontanilla (14 mins/8.9km) in Marbella itself, within walking distance of the centre of Marbella. Our two other favourite beaches are Playa Nagueles, very exclusive beach on the Golden Mile, and our personal favourite, Cabapino Beach (22 mins/25.6 km) with the nearby Las Dunas de Artola, a protected natural park. There is also Bounty Beach (16min/15.1km), Playa de Rio Real (14 mins/15.8km), Playa de Alicate (17 mins/19.2 km), Playa Hermosa (Karma Beach)(19 mins/19.9km) and the famous Nikki Beach (21 mins/22.8km).
Apart from the extensive range of water sports, you could go canyoning in nearby Benahavis (17 mins/12.8km), climbing on the outskirts of Marbella. You could also go hiking, cycling, skating, skateboarding, trampolining, skydiving and karting, there are endless possibilities, see: www.marbellafamilyfun.com/marbella-sport.html. You can also play tennis and paddle tennis at Padel and Tennis Club Nueva Alcantara, and the International Tennis Club. There are several gyms, and Aloha Sports Club where you can also play Padel Tennis and Tennis, as well as Basketball, Netball, and Football, available on a daily basis for children and adults.
To the north of Nueva Andalucia lies Lago de los Tortugas (Turtle Lake), it covers an area of 4.4 hectares, and is home at different times of the year, to a wide range of water birds. Situated just 4.4 km from Nueva Andalucia, it is a beautiful reservoir, where you can swim in the summer, and enjoy a lovely day out. The lake gets its name from the little turtles to be found in the lake.
Nueva Andalucia Entertainment and Dining
Nueva Andalucia has the Casino Marbella, which is located in the Andalucia Plaza Hotel, which is also used as a venue to host exhibitions, parties, meetings and seminars. You will find around 72 slot machines and a variety of other games, for you to enjoy.
If you want a lively night out, La Sala (2.8km) is able to offer live music and DJs at the weekend, you can either take drinks there or dine, or both. There are also Gala Nights and the occasional concert held at Puerto Romano (6.1km), and the Starlite (10.7km) Marbella Festival is an annual event. This year Texas, James Blunt, and Il Divo will be performing, along with a host of well known Spanish and international stars.
There are plenty of beach bars, chiringuitos (beach restaurants), traditionally offering fresh fish dishes, restaurants, and lounge bars to be found in Nueva Andalucia.
Nueva Andalucia Markets and Shopping
As previously mentioned there is the Centro Plaza shopping centre, which as well as a range of shops has a street market within the centre. There are hairdressers and beauty salons, gym, estate agents, therapeutic clinics, lawyers, business centre, architects, holiday companies, bars and restaurants, all to be found at Centro Plaza.
A market is held on Saturday mornings, where you can purchase a large selection of products, including clothing , furniture, jewellery, shoes, fruit, vegetables and plants. Starting at 9am it is finished by 3pm. The market starts from the Bullring, so difficult to miss.
